Mission San Xavier near Gilbert Ray AZ Feb 19, 24

Today's adventure took as to Mission San Xavier del Bac which was established in the 1700's. The church was finished in 1797. The baroque architecture and paintings were exemplary. The details were fastidious.

This mound was next to the mission. There is a path about half way up that goes around it. At the beginning of the path are two lions. Seemingly not part of the mission we found no explaination. On the path there was a first nation elder giving a lesson to a group of students.

The mission is continues to be active and is situated on reservation land. It is the land of the Tohono O'odham people.
There were several spots near the parking lot where vendors could be. There were only two occupied and we ordered fry bread. Most delicious!

We also did some driving down roads  to there end. Also had a brief stop at  a National Park
I have  been calling these cacti Organ Pipe but as I learned at Saguaro National Park they are not. They are Saguaro.
Our campground is full of them.
