Lisbon Site seeing February 24, 2006
Went exploring. Used public transport. They call this place the city hills for a reason. 😰
Three of 2 of the. 3 busses we rode refused payment. So we rode free.
1. Belem Tower.
In was closed due to some work being done. So we couldn't visit. The tide was out when we were there.
Built in 1515 to protect the port and St.Jeromes Monastery.
2. Jeronimos Monastery (St. Jerome)
King Manuel I (1495 to 1521) built it. And also the Belem Tower.
The monestary is huge the photos I took do not show that. There were very long lines to enter. We chose to skip the line and not go in.
3. Vasco de Gama monument.
Vasco de Gama 1500's found a route to India around the Cape of Good Hope (Africa) which meant avoiding the Mediterranean.
4. Walking past a police station. The guards posted at the gate.
5. The highlight was the Quake museum.
Lots of audio visual and immersive experiences. Like one where we in church benches during the quake Nov 01, 1755. All Saints Day. The benches shook and banged as images of the church collapsing were all around.
Sorry no pictures. Dave said it was the best museum ever!!
Home by bus.
Frozen pizza with extras in our room for supper. Followed by a very good night's sleep
😴😴😴
