Left home at 3 am (pst) Feb19 and arrived in Lisbon Feb 20 8am (wet). First hours lost in a haze of exhaustion, jet lag, and mood swings. But now its 11pm local time and jet lag under control its lime for bed. Big walk to day mostly down hill to the river through historic Lisbon. Not even a little bit levevel Finally at the bottom. Back home bus. For happy hour. Life is good. 🍷🍷🍷
When we arrived at the hotel there several red vehicles. Like this one I thought it was the bomb squad. Nope just the fire department. Which is across the street. Seems they park their vehicles on the road. For the day Dave used the 'hop on hop off' map to create a walking tour. 1.Marquis de Pombal is the guy on the pedestal which is in the middle of a major round-about. Its about a block from our hotel. He was instrumental in restoring Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake. 2. Edward VII park is right behind the Marquis. We spotted student several places do stuff. Apparently some kind of on going frosh activities. Kinda looked like they should be in Harry Potter movie. Then we say this marvelous old building. Which turned out to be an exhibition hall. 3. A longer walk to the aquaduct. Built in the 18th C .It is 58 km in total. Survived the 1755 earthquake. Was used to transport water until 1968. 3. Bot...
Went exploring. Used public transport. They call this place the city hills for a reason. 😰 Three of 2 of the. 3 busses we rode refused payment. So we rode free. 1. Belem Tower. In was closed due to some work being done. So we couldn't visit. The tide was out when we were there. Built in 1515 to protect the port and St.Jeromes Monastery. Some detals: This 'rope' was carved stone. Impressive. 2. Jeronimos Monastery (St. Jerome) King Manuel I (1495 to 1521) built it. And also the Belem Tower. The monestary is huge the photos I took do not show that. There were very long lines to enter. We chose to skip the line and not go in. 3. Vasco de Gama monument. Vasco de Gama 1500's found a route to India around the Cape of Good Hope (Africa) which meant avoiding the Mediterranean. 4. Walking past a police station. The guards posted at the gate. ...
