Oliver Lee Memorial st.pk March 07

Once again a bit of an adventure to arrive here. We are at  Oliver Lee Memorial just out side of Alamogardo, New Mexico. Alamogordo's claim to fame is that the first ever atomic bomb was exploded here. Can only get to ground zero twice a year in Aptil and October. Holloman Air Force Base is here complete with missile test ground.

Back to our adventure. We had to travel through a mountain pass from 4000 ft to 8600 ft. Lots and lots of  climbing followed a steep decent. There was snow in the mountains around us even some very close to the road. We managed no problems.  Until...we reached the bottom and the road was closed. A truck had turned over in front of the tunnel entrance. We had to climb back to the summit and take an alternate route. It added another 2 hours and another steep decent . But we made it. Worth it just for the view.

Behind us

In front of us
And the pictures do not give the true beauty and breadth of mountains meeting desert.
