Kartcher Caverns st.pk. March 09

The drive was unremarkable. Except that I love driving through the desert.
We arrived at Kartcher Caverns st.pk near Benson Arizona expecting to stay in overflow campsites.
Yep overflow camping and RV parking are one and the same. However, there was a
room at the inn so got a real campsite. When we arrived we needed to turn on the A/C but by bedtime we needed the furnace. We spent a quiet evening at our site. In the morning we headed to the visitor center to start our cavern tour.
This tour is guided. At this park the focus is on maintaining the caverns as pristine as possible. We had to have our shoes sprayed with alcohol because we had worn them at Carlsbad. To enter and exit we went through an air lock of sorts. Just before entering the caverns proper we were spritz with water to reduce the amount of lint that we would leave behind.
These caverns were not as large or as impressive as Carlsbad but I was very impressed by our guide. The caverns were discovered by a couple of amateur cavers on the Kartcher Ranch. The family wanted the caverns protected so quickly moved to have it named a state park.
