Lafayette. January 31

Exploring day. Still raining. So umbrellas with us. Not needed. 🥳
Off to Lake Fausse Pointe Park. It's a lake in the middle of a swamp. High hopes for alligator oposum sightings.
We took white trail A. The others were flooded - that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Saw lots of swamp.

And lots more swamp.
The trees are Cyprus. Those are not stumps in the water. They are Cyprus knees. The knees shoot up from the Cryprus roots. Purpose not know.

The trail became a little confusing.

I don't know what they're called but I think that they
are exotic.
And are  everywhere
Had an amazing walk through the swamp, feet only a little wet and got all the thorns our of my socks.

BUT no alligators or opossum. 😥

Next stop St. Martinville which is very Cajun as some of first Acadians from Nova Scotia settled there.
It is here that the two people who inspired  Longfellow's poem Evangeline met. It is a poem about an Acadian woman who gets separated from her true love during the expulsion. The poem was published as a book, 52 pages long! I started reading it can't wait to finish it.

Seems the people of St. Martinville like to remember people with sculpture.

AND
Some of the leaves are labeled with the names of dead people. DOB and DOD.

One last thing about St. Martinville then I promise to stop. Wikipedia had a list of notable people from there. These are my favourites

Clementine Barnabett:  serial killer and mass murderer.

Nathan Williams:  accordionist and singer.

Willie Francis:  survivor of the electric chair at 17 years old.
As promised I'm finish for today!
                          😊
